Steyn obtained a Bachelors Degree in Economics from the University of the Free State in 2000, after which he enrolled for the National Diploma in Property Valuation. He obtained a Certificate of Commercial and Industrial Brokerage from the National Institute of Realtors of South Africa during August 2001. He passed the Practical Work School and examination of the South African Institute of Valuers during May 2004. He registered as a Professional Valuer with South African Council for Property Valuers Profession as from 26 September 2006.
After initial valuation training in Bloemfontein, completing mainly residential valuations and some agricultural farm valuations, he was employed by ABSA REAM as a Commercial and Agricultural Valuer for the Border Region. Here he had the privilege to get exposure to a wide spectrum of property valuations. These include commercial valuations such as hotels, guesthouses, abattoirs, filling stations, churches and large shopping centres. On the agricultural side he completed valuations of stock and/or game farms, but also valued abalone, fish and specialized dairy farming operations. Many irrigation farms were valued and also farms that do not form part of the normal run of the mill type of farm. These include broiler and layer houses, piggeries, feedlots, game farms and “lifestyle farms”.
Steyn moved back to Bloemfontein during October 2010 after accepting a position at DDP Valuers. He was appointed as valuation manager for the Free State Region. His daily activities entailed property valuations, liaising with clients and mentorship to candidate valuers under his supervision. He valued residential, agricultural and commercial properties for various purposes.
